The Tarbatt Story

BACKGROUND

Reconstruction Of Convent
Cork aid to Sri Lanka was set up as a direct result of December 26th Tsunami. It struck Unawatuna, a bay on the southern tip of Sri Lanka at 9.26. The world shook and suddenly became a smaller place. Time actually stopped.

At that moment, all cultural, ethnic, religious, social differences were lost as people united and became one. Everyone focused on how best to help each other. People held out their hands and extended the arms of friendship to complete strangers, endangering their own lives to help others. At that moment we all had just one aim to, help each other.

This is the spirit of Cork Aid to Sri Lanka. Bridging differences and rebuilding broken communities.

My family and I are very much indebted to the Unawatuna community for their remarkable bravery and efforts when the Tsunami struck. The Unawatuna community is made up of local families, local business and foreigner travellers.

The spirit in which our local Cork community rallied around was also amazing. Offers of support for all the family from individuals, small groups, local communities and small businesses was truly incredible. The sense of compassion and the love for our fellow mankind was truly wonderful.

Now, on behalf of the Cork Community, we continue to link our communities in the stricken Galle region of Sri Lanka and forge ahead to a bright and optimistic future.
