Project: Help Re-Establish Small Business in Unawatuna
Project Founder: Charlotte Eaton
Project Co-ordinator: Majella Tarbatt

Unawatuna
In the immediate aftermath of the Tsunami, Cork Aid to Sri Lanka raised €29,000 in direct aid, which helped provide food, shelter, medical supplies and dealt with the immediate needs of the Tsunami victims.

When Majella revisited Unawatuna a few months after the Tsunami hit, she realised that the focus needed to shift to funding longer-term initiatives, which would help locals to be self- sufficient. On this second visit, Majella met with Charlotte Eaton, who had set about helping local entrepreneurs re-establish their businesses. Majella, together with Charlotte and Annie Walsh, set up the Small Business Association of Unawatuna with the aim of providing funds to locals to regenerate their businesses.

The scheme has been expanded to include the reestablishment of small businesses in the Galle province as well.

Roger's Story
The aim of this project was to provide Roger with a new glass bottom boat and all the equipment necessary for him to re-establish himself as "Roger", 'Unawatuna's Glass Bottom Boat Man'.

Karuna's New Fridge
The aim of the project was to provide Karuna's small culinary business with a fridge to store her food supplies.

Rosaylin's Shop
The aim of the project was to help Rosaylin and her husband reopen their small shop in Unawatuna.

The Sanctuary
The aim of this project was to re-establish the Sanctuary as a place of Ayurvedic treatment.
