Karuna in her kitchen
Before the Tsunami, Karuna had a small business which offered cooking courses to Tourists- Karuna's culinary skills even warrant a mention in the Lonely Plant, the tourist's bible. Karuna ran her business from her house, like most of the other businesses in Unawatuna. On the day of the Tsunami, Karuna's house and business were destroyed.
Karuna was a great help to cork aid to Sri Lanka, while we endeavoured to help the community of Unawatuna. She provided local knowledge on people's circumstances and helped identify those most in need of aid.
Like all the other businesses in Unawatuna, Karuna lost the equipment needed to carry on her business, most noticeably her cooker and fridge. Cork Aid purchased a fridge for Karuna to enable her to store her food supplies.
