The Sacred Heart Nursery
Majella Tarbatt, Founder, Cork Aid to Sri Lanka, met with Sr. Sulochana, principal of the Sacred Heart Convent Nursery School, on her trip to Sri Lanka last March. Majella was introduced to Sr. Sulochana by one of the nursery school teachers.

The Sacred Heart Nursery teaches children from all religious backgrounds. They teach children from Catholic, Muslin, Buddhist and Tamil religions. The convent is open to all and is a true lesson is religious inclusion. The Sacred Heart nuns are very courageous and are doing tremendous work in the community.

Sr. Sulochana knows many in the community and knows the difficulties that many parents are suffering to keep their children in schools. The stories she tells about local families efforts to get back to normality show tremendous bravery in light of the complete sadness and devastation. The Sacred Heart Sisters offer love and care for these children and are working hard to secure their future education.

The Sr. Sulochana Scholarship Program fund ensures that:

Each School going child receives 1500 rupee per month (11.50 euro). Each University Student receives 2500 rupee per month (20 euro)

This will assist in their transport to and from school, and cover costs such as their lunch, their uniforms and books. So far twenty children have been given renewed hope from the scholarship. Cork Aid to Sri Lanka will remain in regular contact with the children through Sr. Sulochana. She will keep us informed as to how things are progressing with their education.
