Project Aim:
The aim of the Tsunami Scholarship Program is to provide relief and long term ongoing support to school children affected by the Tsunami. This support is in the form of direct financial assistance. The funds each student receives are employed for educational purposes.
Project Start Date: March 2005

  schoolchildren
In March 2005, the Tsunami Scholarship Program became operational. It is currently covering five schools in the Galle District, Southern Sri Lanka. A total of 98 children have been selected from these five schools.
- The Sacred Heart Convent Galle
- The Mahinda College Galle
- St Alysious Galle
- Buona Vista College, Unawatuna
- Buona Vista Primary school, Unawatuna
The Tsunami Scholarship Program established a 1000LKR per month (10 dollars) grant to each student that qualifies, inflation adjusted annually. The grant intends to cover each student's schooling until complete. A unique bank account is set up in Commercial Bank, Galle Fort Branch for each student. The funds are put into each Child's account at the first day of every month. The grant is given to cover the entire duration of each student's schooling years until completion.
The grant will be utilized for any of the following educational purposes
- School Books
- School Apparel
- School Uniforms
- Travel to and from School
- Food at School
- Extra curricular educational activities
Student Qualification Criteria
The qualifying process is handled by delegates of each school in conjunction with the board of trustees. The selection process considers all aspects of each case carefully and allows for flexibility. It is not exclusively set up for orphans or children that have lost one parent. It is intended to help those who genuinely need financial assistance. A student can be disqualified and funding discontinued in the event it is determined that they no longer need the financial assistance.
Financial Procedures
A bank account is set up for each child at the Commercial Bank, Galle Fort Branch. The grant is paid by direct debit into each child's Tsunami Scholarship bank account.
Future Scope
The program is open to students of schools throughout the Tsunami affected areas of Sri Lanka. In the near future students from many other schools will come on board. It is intended by the founders that the process of adding new schools will be gradual and well managed.
